XTERRA Greece Goes Green

The XTERRA Greece Championship off road triathlon event in the breathtaking Athenian Riviera (Municipality of Vari Voula Vouliagmeni) is not only an unforgettable sporting experience among top athletes from every corner of the globe. It has deep social and environmental character!

The environmental commitment of XTERRA GREECE, highlights the natural environment which is the natural stage  and the main inspiration for the race. Following the environmental commitments, we minimize the natural environment disturbance, we ensure sustainability within local communities, we inform athletes and spectators regarding the unique environmental characteristics of each region, and ensure the minimum possible environmental footprint.

For the first time XTERRA GREECE implements, the sport shoe recycling program “LET THEM RUN AGAIN”, the recycling program (paper, glass, plastic) and the voluntary offsetting program for the unavoidable emissions related to athletes’ transportation to and from Athens.

Institute Team for the World – Environmental Alliance 2004+” ngo/npo, in cooperation with XTERRA Greece the leading international Off Road Triathlon organization, organize the first voluntary sports shoe reuse and recycling program.

The reuse and recycling activity “LET THEM RUN AGAIN” of Institute for the World, is an institution action which applied for three consecutive years in the ATHENS AYTHENTIC  MARATHON, and later spread in a great number of important sporting events, collecting hundreds of sports shoe pairs. The concept is associated with the fact that not everyone can afford a sports shoe pair, but everyone has equal rights in sports. In several sporting events abroad the implementation of similar programs is connected with environmental and social purposes.

After the shoe collection, Institute Team for the World, will make a selection of sports shoe pairs that are in good condition. The shoes will be collected during the race event on May 7th in a designated area staffed with Institute for the World volunteers. Sports shoe pairs forgotten in a box or on a shelf at our homes will be reused by people, who need not only to work out, but also need them in their daily lives.

This pair of shoes that we no longer wear can … be reused provided it is good maintained and in decent condition!

XTERRA Greece is a “green”  sports event that respects the environment. We also take initiatives  for the environmental footprint reduction in the  local communities.

For this reason ,we shall collected and forward to recycling all recyclable materials. (Paper, glass, plastic). On the premises of the event there will be paper bins for the recycling materials. Watch out for them and protect the natural aquatic and terrestrial track of XTERRA Greece Championship.

XTERRA Greece, is not only an off road triathlon race, it is also a climate protection pioneer. As a part of its overall commitment to minimize the environmental footprint of this unique event and raise awareness amongst the international triathlon community, XTERRA Greece is facilitating the international participants to offset the unavoidable emissions associated with their flights to and from Athens .

It is for the first time that a voluntary offsetting scheme is “running hand by hand” with XTERRA.

Our environmental experts “GLOBAL CHALLENGES sustainability advisors” and CLIMATE PARTNER will calculate the emissions resulting from your trip to and from Athens .

This year, the climate neutrality initiative is supporting a hydropower station project  in Renun, Sumatra-Indonesia, showcasing that XTERRA GREECE is a sporting event with an international vision in what concerns climate protection .

If you are interested in this CLIMATE NEUTRAL initiative, please send us your departure airport and we will send you back the amount of CO2 equivalent and the amount to be paid on a voluntary basis. After the payment of the offsetting cost you will receive a personalized certificate to a CLIMATE NEUTRAL XTERRA PARTICIPATION.
